Is this even legal?
I live in WV. The owner of the housing complex I live in has started doing some shady stuff. First off, he has been telling people that they can't have an emotional support animal or a service animal. He said he is now denying all animals and that there is nothing we can do about it because we don't have enough money to take him to court, and if we tried, we'd have to get boxes and start packing.
The other thing concerns rent. We were told that the rent would go up if the property failed an inspection that we were having. We worked hard. The inspector that came said that it was one of the nicest properties she had ever inspected. We thought we were safe from this rent hike. Turns out, he lied. Our rent is still going up. We got a letter stating that those on private pay, will pay an additional $40.00. Those on HUD, will pay an additional $200.00. Can he do this? Is this legal or does it violate fair housing laws?
We are told it is because HUD ppl are "trifling" and causing more damage than private pay people. So, he is raising the rent for HUD recipients 5 times the amount he is raising for private pay. HUD says they will not cover the rent increase.
He has also said that HUD ppl get medical insurance and food for free, so they should be able to pay the extra rent because they get so much stuff for free that private pay ppl don't get.
