OOTL. What do I need to be aware of as an Asian applying for med school?

❔ Question

Background: south east Asian, military veteran from an elite unit. Emergency medicine background. 4.0 institutional GPA.

Fellow service members and instructors warned me about some "DEI" movement, how medical schools look down at Asian applicants, and prioritize other less qualified applicants. Some medical school students (Asians, and even white but had background from Asia) that I've talked with mentioned that there was an elephant in the room while they were being interviewed because of their association.

I'm a bit worried now and want to take the time to prepare accordingly.

- What is DEI and how is it used in medical school admissions?

- Will my military background atone for DEI?

- Why are Asians not favored in the medical school admissions process?

- Is there a push for less qualified applicants during residency applications? Meaning, do I need to worry about this when applying for residency?

I'm pretty out of the loop here. Wanting to be a good doc. Thanks for any info.
