I want to get away from my dad. Should I rent or wait and buy a house?
I’ve [28, M] lived with my Dad most of my life. Although he’s never beaten me, we have never really gotten along. My Dad has always struggled with anger (mostly verbal), narcissism, and can be a bigot. In community college I moved in with my grandma, then went off to college, then (mostly due to the pandemic) found myself at home for about 5 years. During this time I went to get my masters and now have a decent paying job (about $60000). This is great because as time goes on, my dad has only continued to cause me anxiety and frustration. He has a good heart, and cares for me, but carries a constant vibe of misery. He burps loudly, stomps around the house, and is disgusting and leaves his dishes out for my sister and I to clean. If you call him out, it starts a fight. There’s a lot of other reasons my Dad drives me up a wall. His constant womanizing and homophobia doesn’t help. He’s just…to make it brief…difficult to live with.
So I decided I can’t do it anymore. Living with him causes my blood pressure to sky rocket (which I get from him). Dating is nightmare because he hasn’t moved from “leave the door open”, which is incredibly embarrassing. And I still wake up in fear, thinking that I heard him scream my name from across the house. Almost. every. morning.
I told him I’m moving out, looking for an apartment, and he (as expected) didn’t react well. He has been going on long tangents every moment I’ve walked by him telling me to save up to buy a house. This could take a year to maybe 3. I just don’t think I can do that. I’m so mentally ready to leave it’s crazy, and by the time I’ve saved up I’ll be past 30.
This isn’t to say I don’t want to ever by a house, just that I want to get away as fast as possible. I know only I can answer this question, but I just feel like I have no idea what to do.
