Angels in America
Have you or anyone you know taught it? What have been the best ways to frame its explicit elements in a way that doesn’t create complaints or blowback? I plan to do some censorship (e.g. the cruising scene in Central Park) but it’s such a central lgbt text that I’ve long felt it deserves a place in upper division high school English classes.
It’s not any more explicit than a Bluest Eye, but it’s sexuality-as-erotic rather than sexuality-as-trauma. And it’s gay—both things that the puritan foundations of America cast as pornographic rather than literary, despite the Pulitzer Prize and tony awards.
Any thoughts welcome!
