Looking for information about metacarpal fracture recovery and long term effects of sunken knuckles
Hey all, about 3 months ago now I fractured my 4th metacarpal. It was a stable long oblique shaft fracture towards the base with displacement of 1.5mm, it was immediately misaligned when it happened and stayed in that position since. I’ve had a really hard time with doctors for this injury, I know very little about what’s going on. I begged them to measure my shortening and they determined it was 2mm, however when I overlayed the X-Rays myself I found that my 4th metacarpal was the same length as my 5th. It looks much greater on the outside as well.
Since the cast came off I’ve been in constant pain and discomfort, nothing I do with my hand feels natural especially gripping around objects. My hand is obviously deformed, my 4th knuckle now sits lower than my pinky in a fist and I have a large bump on the back of my hand. The inside of my knuckle is below the crease of my palm and that area always bruises and irritates after gripping. However, my movement is looking really good and I have no rotation.
I’ve been out of the cast about the same amount of time I was in the cast and it’s made some improvement but I still can’t tolerate a day of little to no activity despite getting the inflammation under control. No one has been able to tell me what to expect with this recovery and I’m so exhausted from being in the dark. I’ve been going to PT twice a week and my current doctor ordered an MRI, I see them again in 2 weeks. No one has been willing to discuss surgery, they’ve tried to scare me out of it.
I’m a competitive weightlifter so the shortening is super concerning to me. I’d love to hear personal stories about this kind of recovery and how a sunken knuckle can affect grip. I’d also like input on what I should do in this situation, if I’m on the right track with the treatment I’m getting.
