Please help me understand what to do with my loans
Hey everyone,
So with the news about SAVE today I am trying to figure out the best move moving forward. All of my undergrad loans ($27k) are on SAVE forbearance currently and I have just been letting them sit there without making payments. The thing is, I have enough saved to pay them off--when my grandmother passed last year she left me $30k. But my dad, who works in finance, has advised me not to pay them off since they're relatively low-interest (I went to school during COVID so I have some as low as 2.75% and highest is 4.9%). He says it's best to put the money in HYSAs and treasury bonds, where the interest it earns will (supposedly) outpace the interest that my loans accrue and I'll still have the money if I need it. I took that advice for the past year, but now that interest accrual is resuming, I sort of want to just get rid of them and be done with it, especially since it just seems really exhausting with how often available plans and how they work get changed and toyed with by these politicians who don't actually care about anything they're doing. It's just not a headache I want to have for 10-20 more years. Not to mention that my income is actually very low (about $35k), so I have doubts as to whether I'll actually even be able to afford monthly payments while my savings sit in HYSAs. Is anyone in a similar situation to this? Does anyone have advice about whether to just get rid of these loans or take my dad's advice to try to make the minimum payments and put my savings in HYSAs? I really appreciate any tips.
