“ChatGPT can do your job” Ok bro, go ahead
I was working as a tech writer at this mid-tier software company. Not exciting, but I basically kept the whole internal system running. I wrote the docs, built the structure, automated the boring stuff. No one else knew how it worked. Literally. It was just me.
Then my boss, let’s call him Brad because he gives off major Brad energy, strolls in one day like he’s just discovered the future. “We’re integrating AI into the workflow,” he says, all proud. Next thing I know, he’s asking me to “document how ChatGPT can replace parts of your job.”
I thought he was just being annoying. Turns out I was getting replaced. He straight up told me, “We’re streamlining with AI, so we won’t need your role anymore.” Like dude. I am the role.
But of course, they still needed me to “help transition” everything. Train the team. Hand over your tools. Show us how to automate the documentation.
Sure. No problem.
I showed Brad how to ask ChatGPT to write a blog post. Gave him a cheat sheet like he was in middle school. I even helped him set up some prompts to make it look official.
But when he asked for my notes, my automations, my scripts, the stuff that actually made the system work?
“Oh, I thought AI was handling it now?”
He looked like he just saw God. Blank stare. Zero comprehension.
Anyway, I finished the two weeks and dipped. Two weeks later, absolute meltdown. Docs broken. No idea how to update anything. Customer complaints piling up. Brad tried to get ChatGPT to write API guides using random guesses and copy-paste. Devs are pissed. PMs are panicking. I heard through the grapevine they hired a consultant to clean up the mess who’s now charging three times what I made and still can’t figure it out.
You wanted AI to do my job? Awesome. Let it.
