Did they often cry when you show them they’ve pushed too far?

Wondering if this is a common experience. I’d talk to my ex calmly, politely and constructively about whatever matter I felt we needed to jointly discuss and improve, and he’d be - in varying degrees - rude, intolerable, verbally aggressive, roll his eyes, look at his phone, etc. But the moment I’d say that I’d had enough and suggest i might need to leave the relationship, he’d immediately flip out of the state he waa in and look immediately remorseful and sad, tears in his eyes. (This happened a few times in our relationship of a few years.) Have others experienced this?
