AITA for Taking Flowers That Weren’t Mine?

For context: I live by a waterfront trail. This trail is quite long, and every few hundred feet there’s a bench. There benches have plaques on them for people who have passed but the plaques are aged. I’ve walked these trails for years.

The other day I was walking my dog on this trail. I saw a white balloon in the distance attached to a bench and at first I thought, “hmm.. is IT gonna pop up, seems kinda weird”. I got closer and saw another white balloon. When I got right to the bench, I saw a bouquet of flowers tied to the bench. White roses, and another bouquet of assorted. Nothing else other than the balloons, flowers and some empty cans of alcohol.

I thought then, maybe it was a proposal gone wrong or they had been forgotten there. I didn’t want the flowers to wilt in the heat, so I took them off the bench to bring home and put into water.

My mom and friend said it was for a memorial but I explained to them it didn’t seem like that at all from my perspective.

But now it’s got me thinking, AITA for taking the flowers? Despite it being with good intentions.
