Questions about sun exposure and damage

How big of a concern is it, and how long does it take to occur? I avoid direct exposure whenever possible, and wear a hat if I plan to be outside for more than ten minutes, if the UV index is reading above a level four.

I've read that it requires prolonged exposure over multiple days to actually notice any changes in the hair. I'm sure that sun burn is a bigger concern for shorter exposure times
