Character Reference Help

I’m a fresh graduate and I recently applied for a job that is different from the degree I studied for. The job asked for character references and I have no one to vouch for me in writing since all I know are teachers (I’m an education graduate). All I can think of is my adviser from my student publication but I don’t think she knows me so I’m not that close to her AND she recently just resigned.

What should I do? Should I just leave the character references blank? Wouldn’t that be unprofessional?
