Why does the blue line switch to the opposite track?

I was going to towards Long Beach on the blue line earlier and I zoned out for a bit and I realized we were on the northbound track. We were on the wrong side for a mile or two. Noticed this at 7th metro too. I’ll be facing the track expecting to see headlights appear but then a train passes going the opposite direction.
