Left my bedside job. Not mad about it.
I am an LPN, bridging to my RN. I have about 40 ish days left and I can take boards (that’s graduation). Anyway, I’ve been on a MedSurg floor for 3 and 1/2 years at a hospital and I loved it until recently. I went on an extended leave due to some family medical issues, and returned and felt so burnt out. I had lost all compassion. I couldn’t be empathetic to my patients and I felt like I was doing them a disservice. My pay after completing my RN wasn’t going to be worth it anyway so I left. I found an office job as a nurse manager in a nursing home. I can come and go as I please. I don’t have to tell anyone when I’m taking a lunch, when I’m taking a bathroom break. If I need to leave early I can. I also make double what I was making at the hospital and after I get my RN, I’ll make $10 more an hour. I feel so happy that I’m able to do this. My work life balance is great and it’s been so helpful being able to have such a flexible schedule with school. My friend who is also bridging with says I’m crazy and I’m wasting my skills. But honestly, after being an LPN for about 10 years, it’s a nice change. My goal has always been to teach or do something not bedside. I love patient care when I can ACTUALLY take care of patients. But I haven’t been able to do that in a long time. Anyone else feel this way after leaving bedside? I somewhat feel that I should have given it a chance after getting my RN, but the pay and flexibility are so worth it.
