Help a soph transfer, who's a month over the deadline, choose UPenn vs Columbia

Transfer

tldr: I prefer columbia but would feel guilty turning down better career opportunities by not going to penn. maybe I just suck it up and go where I should, rather than where I want.

I'm having a hard time picking between these two schools and they're spot-on the exact same price. I'd like to do data science, machine learning/AI, or finance in the future.

I feel pressure/an obligation to pick UPenn because from my research, they seem to have slightly better connections/network/internships, so my ROI would be greater (considering how cooked it has become to get a job, I will take any advantage I can get). Yet personally I want to go to Columbia. Unlike a lot of people who dislike the cramped/chaotic NYC atmosphere, I feel excited about the idea of living in NYC as I grew up near it and always regularly visited. It will be a super novel experience for me which is great for helping me grow as a person.

I visited both campuses and thought both were okay. I like how Penn has a typical college campus and how Columbia creates a separate space from the city, but didn't like the area around Penn and how Columbia's campus is a little small. I didn't feel as excited about Philly compared to NYC (I might just not be as familiar with it). I also paid to try a Penn dining hall first-hand and confirmed the food is not good.

They're even for my major (math) and with equal research opportunity. However, they both have cons in coursework. I'd like to take statistics and applied math classes—Penn only offers a pure math major and looking at its degree sheet, it does force me to take almost all pure classes. I wouldn't mind doing pure but I'm just not that interested. At Columbia, they have an explicit statistics and applied math dept with lots of cool classes, but I have constantly heard the teaching quality of these departments isn't good. Also I don't mind the Core.

I've also talked to multiple columbia students about the controversy: it doesn't impact recruiting and employers don't see columbia students differently. it has zero real world impact on me.

miscellaneous: equally far from home, accepted the same amount of transfer credit, have comparable student bodies, same study abroad opportunities
