Hi there, how possible is it to write a script that has flashbacks as a core aspect of the story?

I've been trying to write a script for a short film for a couple of years now, but have never been able to make it work. The story cuts back from present to past pretty frequently. However, I've run into some trouble when trying to write it. I think the constant switches from past to present quickly come off as unnatural and weird. I don't know if it's just that in a written format it will always come off as awkward, or my writing skills are not defined enough to know how to approach the issue and make it work. Would love to be able to discuss it with a more experienced writer and learn how to make it work! Thanks.
