Can I claim promissory estoppel or misrepresentation after being terminated 1 week into a 3-month contract?
Hi all,
I’m looking for legal advice or shared experiences on a situation I’m currently facing with a UK-based company that I believe misled me during the hiring process. I was hired as a contractor for what was presented as a stable and expanding role but was let go after just one week.
Here are the key facts:
- I was actively headhunted for a senior-level contract position. They made multiple representations about the company’s financial health and growth.
- I was given a 3-month contract with a 1-week notice clause, but I also received written confirmation that this short notice was just for the initial trial phase and that the intention was to convert the contract into a 1-year agreement with a 1-month notice.
- After only 1 week, they terminated the contract without any cause or proper explanation.
- I resigned from a stable job I held for 3 years (and where I was about to be promoted and given a raise) based entirely on their representations and the understanding that I would have at least 3 months of paid work, possibly much longer.
- I also believe they were already aware of internal financial issues and declining revenue when they hired me but concealed it during the process. One line in the hiring test even said: "Assume the brand is profitable and has resources to expand..."
I’ve kept documentation of everything:
- Contract and termination notice
- Emails confirming intention to extend
- Onboarding materials
- Financial claims made during hiring
- Evidence of financial harm and reliance on their promises
I’m wondering if I may have a case for:
- Promissory estoppel (given their representations and my reliance)
- Misrepresentation
- And what kind of compensation (if any) might be realistic in a case like this
If any lawyers or people with relevant experience here can give me some clarity on:
- Whether this is worth pursuing legally
- If compensation could go beyond the 1-week notice
- Whether negotiation or legal proceedings are more appropriate
Thanks in advance this has been really destabilizing and I’d appreciate any insight before I decide on next steps.
