Had my first manual lesson today, I think I’ve turned my brain to mush with automatic

Bit of a rant - I’ve been driving around with family in a speedy little electric BMW i3 for the past couple of weeks, which is fully automatic. I’ve loved it so far and it’s really helped me get my confidence on the road, learning the rules, etc. But it’s SO sensitive on the accelerator, if I want to slow down, i just lift off. I basically never use the brake pedal.

But I had my first manual lesson today and felt like such an idiot for being so terrified of the clutch and how reactive the car was. My right foot is used to being so delicate with the acceleration in the automatic that I’m basically constantly not giving the car enough gas as I’m switching gears, AND I’m consistently too harsh with the clutch because my left foot hasn’t had anything to do before. It’s a lot to unlearn and also learn at the same time. Also didn’t help that my instructor was talking about all the times her daughter got into motorcycle crashes, really helped me focus…

It’s so weird. I’m basically learning two languages at once. Wondering if there’s anyone else with similar experiences, or any advice about how to balance learning an automatic and manual at the same time. 😵‍💫
