He asked for space but to also wait for him

I (37F) have been dating (28M) for two months now.

He just recently found out that he might be impacted by a huge tech layoff and has become extremely depressed.

We were having a conversation where he said he felt my energy was off (because I would forget to respond to him ASAP while I was doom scrolling on Tiktok - I was having a rough week at work) so he said that since I don’t seem interested in him anymore and since he’s so depressed he just wants space for himself. He told me it’s not just me he doesn’t want to talk to but everyone including family and friends - wants to seclude himself.

I respected his boundaries and wishes and didn’t initiate any contact but he’s been talking to me every day ever since but just not as frequently. This has been going on for a week.

Last Sunday he asked if we could hang out which we did. During our hang out I asked him what it meant for him to have space. He told me he needed to get his shit together. I asked him what that meant and how long does he think that might take. He gave me details and a timeline of a couple of months. I asked him if he wanted me to wait for him or just go no contact during that time and speak to him again when he was ready. He asked me to please wait for him and not see or sleep with anyone else during that time and he won’t either. I asked him if he would wait for me and he immediately and were 1,0000% yes.

Do these arrangements and waiting ever go well? Am I being naive waiting for him? I was just going to take this time to focus on myself anyway.

Thank you all!
