Have AT&T Fiber. Need to connect a device to a 2.4 GHz network. Is it possible to do without disabling band steering? Any issues with disabling band steering?

So, I have some smart light bulbs (i.e., AvatarControls) that I've recently been having some issues with (e.g., not turning on consistently according to the schedule). After a bit of troubleshooting, I believe the issue is that they're only supported by 2.4 GHz.

I'm currently using band steering (since I think it's the default setting). I went to set up the 2.4 GHz network with a different network name and received this warning:

Your 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names and passwords must match, and all radios must be enabled with WPA2 security setting, to benefit from the enhanced Wi-Fi technology on your device.

I've got a few questions, first, is it possible to connect these smart bulbs to just the 2.4 GHz without disabling band steering? Or would band steering do that automatically?

The directions for the smart bulbs say that my phone (through which the bulbs are controlled) needs to be connected to the 2.4 GHz network as well. That said, the app for the bulbs also has an option to enter in a network name so I'm wondering if I could put the bulbs on 2.4 and my phone on 5 GHz.

If I can't, are there any issues with disabling band steering? I'd prefer to keep my phone on 5 GHz if possible, granted I don't do anything that really demands fast speeds besides streaming. Usually just browse Reddit on my phone.
