Save Money with a 2009-2013 awd or max budget for a 2014-2016 awd?

Curious about thoughts on these different generations and if the price point difference is worth it? We were considering a sienna but living on a long gravel driveway and frequent mountain trips are making us lean towards a highlander. We need 3 rows for kids all still in either carseat or booster. Thoughts on third row room? Safety differences? Anything else we are missing? If I shoot on the low range I can get an older highlander for 1/2 or less the price of the 2014-2016. When I say max our budget I just mean our budget for this vehicle. We can comfortably afford either but of course saving the $$ always sounds nice.
