Having a moral dilemma on whether or not to to expose my coworkers and job for conspiring with a family member to steal an animal and hide it.

Personal

Sooo where to begin on this….I think best way to preface this is by stating that I work for a small business pet store which specializes in small animals, fish, and reptiles. The business has had its fair share of criticism and controversy. Some dirty things have still happened behind the scenes since there was numerous posts on social media about animals not being cared for properly. FM will be used as short for “Family member” Anyways…. I had an animal of mine go missing many months ago and had a weird feeling a family member (I’m intentionally being vague) took it while I wasn’t home. Had no proof so I couldn’t go to the cops for help. I reached out to my boss to check the cameras and look for the animal since FM admitted to being there earlier in the day. Boss said he checked the cameras and say FM was there but didn’t see the animal in question. About a week later, boss approaches me at work and said he heard from someone that FM had that animal but my boss wasn’t sure if that was true and didn’t trust who told him that. I was skeptical of that. So I kept searching my house and neighborhood for the animal, there was posters and social media posts made in regards of the disappearance. Now months later, I find that FM left devices at my house from when they moved out and I accessed them out of curiosity. I found that FM did in fact steal the animal (text and photographic evidence sent in group chats) and that my coworkers knew of the theft and may now be trying to rehome the animal to a coworker to keep it hidden from me. There is likely premeditation also. FM took pictures of the animal at certain angles to make it look skinny and told my coworkers I was neglecting it. FM went on about how I “never cared” about my animal despite vet records stating otherwise. Coworkers then start defending FM for the theft. Other photos from the day of the crime don’t show the animal being as skinny as communicated to my coworkers. FM came back to my house on multiple occasions since the theft to take pictures of my other animals as “evidence of neglect”and took photos with certain items cropped out or moved to make it seem like I was trying to get them sick or kill them. Also stated to other people [without proof] that I willingly drop, shake, and handle animals to the point of harming them. There was also text messages insinuating the possibility of another theft yet to come. FM also contacted a parent [of mine] joking how they’d steal one of their animals as well. I went to police with evidence. I won’t get into detail too much for legal reasons. Coworkers don’t know that I know of the evidence. My coworkers previously once helped someone get an animal back to a rightful owner, and now they defend the theft of another. Part of me wants to expose all the evidence and take them down. But I do feel a little sorry for my boss who owns the store, since now I’m wondering if he was trying to stand up and actually help me. I don’t know how much more involved he is. My coworkers have a very tight circle and there are family members of my boss that are part of that circle. I’ve always been an outsider to them. My boss has given me much opportunity and been very understanding and fair in times of need. I’ve worked there a handful of years and we oftentimes collaborate on plans for inventory, new equipment projects, ordering product, and he allowed me to speak on his behalf to a few wholesale business representatives. In small business, that can mean quite a lot. I don’t [want] to hurt him. Maybe it’s a bad thing that I’d hope for people to have some amount of moral decency left. At the end of the day, that store is how we all pay our bills. I don’t think he has any intentional direct involvement. But I also don’t know what information he may have heard in the last few months that he isn’t coming clean about. I’m torn and don’t know what to do.

I’m sorry if this comes off like a rant. It’s been an emotional roller coaster for far too long and I’ve tried keeping myself composed the best I can. That animal meant the world to me and FM knew it.
