Identifying a unit with no labels?

What if you come across a unit that has no label outside or inside the unit? What if you have to replace a cap and don’t have anything telling you what type it takes and a existing cap isn’t even there? I’m guessing you could maybe go by amp draw by compressor but it would have to be on first…?
