Rosen Walker, the famous Witch of Alcapez, a notorious murderer who killed her husband. She was sentenced to 8 years in prison, only for her to escape 5 years later by digging a hole with a spoon. She escaped once more when put in prison again, crushing the pride of the imperial family. Now she’s being sent to the Isle of Monté for 50 years where only the most dangerous criminals are gathered. An island with no escape, surrounded by deep waters and deadly creatures. “A compulsive liar and highly intelligent. Don’t be deceived when interrogating her”, they said. “I am innocent! I have not once told a lie my entire life!” She said.

Ian Conner, the praised war hero who fought in the Battle of Riortin as a young commander at the age of 20. Now, his main mission is to bring Rosen Walker to the Isle of Monté in one piece. But she’s a natural schemer who will try to escape again, so be careful. However, Ian is a highly skilled pilot, him and his team was the only beacon of hope to the empire. During everyone’s dark days where they hid in their basements while the enemy planes flew over, Ian’s voice on the radio would be the only sound in the world that would comfort them. “Citizens of Riortin, this is Ian Connor speaking. Hide in your basements, do not make a single sound. The Air Force is here, we will protect you”, he said.

But what if the Witch of Alcapez really did not commit the murder? What if she had a reason for doing so? What if she was mainly a scapegoat, so that everyone could have someone to blame and forget about the current war? What if the praised war hero was dying inside, but couldn’t show it, because the burden of the empire was on his shoulders? The citizens clung into the hope that the Air Force and soldiers would save them, without knowing that they were mere students who just graduated from the academy and were sent to die. Ian Connor became commander at 20, because all the higher ups ran away. The empire won the war but is decaying, lives of young men taken on a whim, bombs dropping, taking away thousands of lives. Was the victory really worth it?

This story has so many parallels and is very emotionally beautiful. You’ll see how war can badly affect someone, especially PTSD for soldiers. You’ll see how war is mostly old men talking, and young men dying. You’ll see how Rosen and Ian ironically relied on each other during the war, without even having met each other. You’ll see the absurdity of misogyny back in the day, where even women soldiers had their faces and names buried, the absurdity of the witch trials. This manhwa is a must read. Go on. You won’t regret it.
