Kitchen table finish ?

I would like to refinish an old kitchen table that I bought and that I am going to sand. I am looking for a product (lacquer or varnish) that I could apply with my Earlex 5500 (it will be my first real project with it at the same time). I would like the product to be quite resistant (to scratches and liquid stains) but without costing a fortune either. Do you have anything to suggest?
