[M4F] Lifeguard on duty.

Los Angeles, California. Playa Del Rey. Saturday afternoon.

I'm sitting on the lifeguard tower, looking out over the crowd of people, probably 1,000, 1,200, or somewhere thereabouts. A couple of volleyball games going on. Dozens of families. Surfers. Someone is grilling some burgers somewhere.

I'm wearing a tank top and some bright red shorts, feet up on the railing, a pair of binoculars in my hand. I scan the crowd before checking out the waterline. Not seeing anything that requires my immediate attention.

The sun stays high in the sky, the hours ticking by. Nothing too bad. As the day wanes on, the families start to leave and the college kids start to arrive. A group approaches and asks if they can set up a bonfire. They show their permits and tell them they can.

I sit back, my shift long over, watching the local college kids building a bonfire. By the time the sun has gone down the fire is lit and lighting up the beach. Someone brings out a stereo and music starts playing. Dancing. A cooler, some drinks. The smell of weed starts wafting around.
