We Must Rethink our Architecture
I want to start by saying I am not an architect, nor a genius. But for a long time, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about how the world is developing—especially in terms of modern architecture.
Modern architecture around the world has become nearly identical. Go to Shanghai, and you won’t see much difference from New York; go to Istanbul, and it’s the same. The world has grown more homogeneous in architectural style. I disagree with this normalization because it erases the beautiful diversity of cultures and fails to create structures that feel authentically tied to a country’s identity.
We can rethink how skyscrapers are built. You don’t need to copy Los Angeles for your city to be great. Instead, we could find a balance between traditional and modern ideas—making the world a more visually rich place to live. When architecture reflects local identity, it reshapes how we see modernity itself.
Yes, population growth and mass construction have driven this trend, but let’s not forget: the human mind is an infinite resource. If we prioritize creativity, we can design better solutions for this century. We should debate, experiment, and strive to give value to the spaces where we live, breathe, and cherish time with our families.
I don’t know what others think, but seeing this group made me want to share my perspective. Again, I’m not an architect, so I may overlook technical or cost-related challenges—but I believe anything is possible if we just TRY
Thank you. 😊
