Bone Spur in Hand/Finger

🧑‍🏫Question/Help (Intermed./Advanced)

I’ve recently developed what appears to be a bone spur at the base of my middle finger on my left hand, and I was wondering if anyone here has had a similar experience or could offer some advice. Over the past five years, I’ve gravitated toward forceful, dramatic pieces—stuff like Rachmaninoff’s Preludes in Gm & C#m and Chopin’s Revolutionary Étude—which I’ve absolutely loved diving into. Still, I never imagined that my hand might literally begin to reshape itself in response.

At the moment, it mostly bothers me when I pick things up and feel a bit of pinching in the skin, but I’m quite concerned about how it might progress. The idea of it spreading to other joints or interfering with my ability to play is honestly pretty frightening.

They always emphasize the importance of proper technique and playing safely, and I’ve really tried to take that to heart—especially after watching my (non-biological) uncle struggle with arthritis. I’m only 29, so this isn’t something I expected to be dealing with so soon. That’s part of why I’ve been making a conscious effort to stay mindful of my technique and to incorporate stretches and lighter pieces to maintain balance.

I’d really appreciate any insights—whether it’s from personal experience or from a medical or technical standpoint.
