2 Degrees, 1 IT Grad Cert… Still jobless. Which IT path is actually employable?

Hi all,

I’m 23 (almost 24), based in Australia. I have a Bachelor of Mathematics (Applied) and a Bachelor of Economics (International Trade & Finance)…and I’m still unemployed.

Last year I pivoted into IT. I’ve just completed a Graduate Certificate in IT, and now I’m thinking about moving on to a Graduate Diploma — but I’m stuck choosing a specialisation.

These are my options:

  • AI
  • Process analytics & automation
  • Computer science
  • Cyber security
  • Data science
  • Human-centred design
  • IoT
  • IT management
  • Software development

In the Grad Cert, I liked the more “computer science”-style subjects. But I’m worried they’re too abstract and won’t help me actually get hired.

My priorities:

  1. Strong job prospects
  2. Not easily replaceable by AI
  3. Decent pay
  4. A path into the public sector

Right now, I’m leaning toward software development or cyber security. I feel like I should already be qualified for a data role, and the fact that I’m still struggling makes me wonder if more study will even help.

Anyone working in the field (especially in Australia or gov IT), I’d love to hear what you think. This decision could shape my future, and I don’t want to get it wrong.

Thanks in advance.
