July Mint Blog Odd Rant?
I just read the July Mint blog entry--does anyone know what triggered the self-contradictory, ideological rant that culminated in the quite contradictory statement "We will not tolerate any kind of ideology."?
I found the statement "There’s no such thing as 'freedom of speech'" as particularly bothersome to me as I was raised to consider same as a basic tenet of liberty and freedom, like the rest if the 1st Amendment (am partial to the 2nd as well).
I agree with what was being attempted to put forth, however found it awkwardly worded--a simple "be mature and civil" would have sufficed for we "boomers".
My mum was a "war bride" from London, she was 13 during the Blitz and lost most of her family; the US Constitution was quite dear to her and we were taught to respect it and the freedom it brought--this arguably makes me hyper-sensitive to such statements.
I was also raised to understand that when someone "calls you a name" or otherwise criticizes or "disses" you, you have three thing to consider:
- If "it" is not true, ignore it as it's irrelevant;
- If "it" is true, you need to improve yourself;
- If "it" really pisses you off, pop 'em in the snoot!
