British Spy/Detective Thriller Book Series

I read half this book a few years back so the details are a bit fuzzy. I think it was the 6th book or something. The series wasn't that well received but it was long running and I believe a NYT best seller.

I thought it was Alex Cross or a similar name but Alex Cross didn't fit the details. He was some James Bond type character.

The guy has an elite pedigree (rich, very good looking, intelligent), British (or European), and knows international powerful people and works with the government. I recall there was a tree with a sniper / gunman that was part of the early plot. His fiance (?) died before they married and she was extremely beautiful and a childs doctor or something. It didnt happen in that book though, it alluded to the past. Everything was always over the top and ridiculous.
