Question about OCD and mental illness

First time explaining my OCD to anyone else ever, so this is hard for me to explain.

For some time now, my OCD has taken this really exhausting form where I’m constantly interviewing myself in my head. If I make a perceived mistake, I immediately think, “Why did that happen?” and I feel like I need to come up with the perfect answer—just in case someone asks me about it in the future and I need to be prepared (?????)

My brain also throws in endless “what if” scenarios: What if this happened? What would I say? How would I deal with it? How would I explain it? It’s like I’m rehearsing answers for questions no one is asking and scenarios that most likely won’t happen. Most of the time, the situations aren’t even bad in themselves, they’re just bothersome.

Any tips for breaking free from this constant need to explain yourself? Part of the ruminating feels like such an ingrained part of my life that it’s honestly hard for me to tell when I’m ruminating or not.

Thanks!
