Is Springfield Dome Sports Park our "Simpsons Monorail"?
Is the Springfield Dome Sports Park our cities version of the Simpsons "Monorail" moment?
If your not familiar, in Simpsons episode "Marge vs. the Monorail", a conman "Lyle Lanley" hypes the city into building a monorail train, that turns out to be just a big scam, and in the end the conman takes all the money.
For our monorail, aka Springfield Dome Sports Park, here some other opinion factoids:
- The project will cost $65 million, and the city is essentially gifting $45 million to "Steve Luker and Dirk McCormick of Legacy Pointe Development", the Kyle Lanley of the story. The city is not an investor, not a partner, its just a dump of cash into these developers hands. If this is such a "home-run" idea, let them find their own funding. A classic story of socializing the cost from taxes, and the developer privatizing the profit.
- So this dome, the city is essentially paying 10s of millions, for a DISPOSABLE, temporary building, that only ages to be worst looking and dirty. What can go into this after sport tourism no longer popular? Where will the millions be then? And the reason for a blow up building, much much more profitable to developers.
- Think of all the things $45 million could do, for you know, the actual people that live here? The massive amounts of debt the city holds perhaps? Give 450 small business 100K to you know actually build wealth into family businesses? Do something innovative with Lake Springfield Beach house? Or better yet, not increase taxes? Just spit balling, but why are we building a city just for other people to come into for the weekend, and not the people that live here?
- What ever happened to having sports at our public parks? The commodification of sports and recreation into the hands of for-profit profiteers, is that what we want? They get to charge whatever they want/can for us to hit a ball? Douglas Park, Patrick J. Cadigan Park, Stuart Park, all used to have open sports fields. I assume the city will just nuke the remaining ones over time, that are already dying, to promote the dome. And what about the other for profit sports parks in town like 'Spartan Sports Park' - are we okay with the city essential killing the market for anyone wanting to build sports parks in the future. How can anyone compete with a $65 million dollar city sponsored sports park?
- The developers are claiming that this sport park will have HUGE economy returns with thousands and thousands of people coming in and spending money? Will it, really? You can look at other cities that big giant sports stadiums, and they rarely wash out to positive economic gains. And when people come, where will they be spending there money - at giant corporate brands chain hotels like Fairfield and Marriot, chain restaurants they know off veterans, and big box corporate stores like Target/Walmart/Scheels. What super small percentage of visitors are seeking out family owned/operated restaurants and hotels that would build wealth in our community? And the kicker of all this, the west-side of town doesn't need any economic help. Look at the north, downtown, and east sides, that are just gutted and collapsing. Are these visitors gonna drive over to that part of town to spend money?
Is this project really helping where help is needed, into the hands of those that need economic prosperity? Or this all just a Simpsons Monorail?
