Matatu thieves

Casual

This time last year, I was getting off my shift around 9 PM. I was dead tired, just wanted to get home. So was standing hapo kwa footbridge ya Garden City waiting for a mat. Then this mat with maybe four guys inside pulls up and say wanaenda kule naenda.

Now normally I never board those ones. If a mat's not at least 80% full, my instincts say “keep waiting.” But that night I was chasing time and thought “ai, what's the worst that could happen?” Spoiler: a lot.

I hop in and take the seat behind the driver. Then the donda tells me to switch seats and nikae huko mbele. I move without overthinking it.

This guy who ends up seated next to me leans over and asks “ni saa ngapi kwa simu yako?” Immediately my gut was like: something's off. So I look him dead in the eye and ask “Which phone?” He replies: “hio yako.” I Just scoffed and told him to ask the driver instead.

Barely a minute later the matatu leaves and mind you ni kama ni mimi tu nimeipanda kutoka kwa hio stage. We haven’t even passed Astrol petrol station when they pull the “mlango haifungiki” trick. That’s when I knew nimefikiwa leo pia.

Luckily, I had on a coat with an inner pocket and that’s where my phone was. I could feel dude patting my outer pockets while I’m there fake struggling with the door.

Eventually they gave up and literally threw me out near Safari Park. Mind you That phone was barely a week old. Bought it with my minimum wage savings after getting pickpocketed the previous phone😭

Anyway Thika road isn't for beginners and I still blame Ruto
