How do I order stock?

I know this might sound really uninformed but…

I’ve always wanted to own my own book and gift shop. Now that I’m on maternity leave I’m really considering getting the ball rolling.

However, where do I begin? Do I need to lay out the money for the products in the first instance? Or do I order them in and pay for them once they’ve sold?
