I’ve never told my story before not to my family, not to my friends. Just needed to let it out.
I’m 23, Black, and was adopted into a white middle-class family when I was really young. Good home, great parents, and siblings that treated me well. But under the surface, a lot happened that I never really processed some things that shaped me in ways I’m only now starting to understand.
Without going too deep into the trauma, I dealt with things as a kid that confused me, blurred my sense of boundaries, and pushed me toward porn, unhealthy thoughts, and self-isolation at a young age. I never told anyone until I told my girlfriend recently, who had her own childhood trauma.
From there, it was like I spent the rest of my life trying to look normal on the outside while something else was breaking inside. I got obsessed with validation, women, sex, lies, and then eventually alcohol. I joined the Navy, thinking I could reset but when my mom died during my service, and then my niece overdosed, I just lost myself completely.
I spiraled. Drank every day. Blew through inheritance money. Got discharged. Lied to everyone including myself. Tried to end it. Didn’t.
Now I’m trying to rebuild. My girlfriend and I are in a better place. I’ve owned up to a lot of what I’ve done. But the weight of the past, especially the parts I never said out loud until now, still sits heavy.
I’m not really sure what I’m asking. Maybe just… has anyone else felt like they’ve been carrying two versions of themselves for so long? One people see, and one that’s buried?
I’ve never shared this before. I don’t expect anything. Just wanted to finally say it.
