living with a brother with schizophrenia

Need Support

A year and a half ago, my brother was diagnosed with schizophreniform. The doctor said that if he won't drink his meds consistently up to 6 months, it would turn into a severe case – schizophrenia, which will be incurable.

He was only 3 months through his medication process, but he stopped it as he kept insisting that he is perfectly fine. As much as we want him to continue with his medication, we don't have a choice because we cannot force him.

(Additional context: My brother is almost 6 ft and he's strong, while my mother and I are barely 5 ft. He's 19 years old and I'm younger than him. In terms of physical aspects, we cannot do anything to force him, or else he'd go violent, risking our safety. Btw, my father had a stroke and is partially paralyzed, so no man in the house could protect us.)

Since he stopped drinking his medication, he started to have these psychotic episodes where he starts breaking our mirrors, the saints in the altars, house decors, and anything that is in his sight.

We wanted to talk to him about it, but he isn't in the right mind to understand anything that is happening to him. So, secretly, during those episodes, we put his medications in his food just so we could all sleep at night — or else there will be constant war in the household.

If you're asking why we just don't bring him to the mental hospital or therapist — we ALWAYS try to do that, but it's so hard to convince him. When he has these episodes and without him knowing that he is consuming medicine, he acts as if nothing happens after and that he is perfectly fine. We can't just keep on putting meds in his food because it has to be at the right timing. The problem does not lie with the medication, but him not being able to accept his condition.

This cycle kept repeating for months and this is not only affecting him, but my family's welfare as well. I wanted to focus on my studies and seek some part-time work, but I just can't do it since our situation conflicts with it.

I'm an incoming first-year student and my course is quite demanding. I don't know if I can keep up with it, given that I have to maintain my grades because tuition is expensive, and if this situation in our family keeps on repeating, I'm afraid I may fail.

It's really taking a toll on our mental health. And as much as I wish him to just die so we all won't suffer, especially him, we have no choice but to help him, because no one else would.

What's the best thing we could do?

We're not rich, so we can't easily just admit him to a private mental facility. Our savings are so drained already given that my father was admitted because of stroke for 2 times and he was admitted in the mental facility 2 times as well (these are 3-7 years ago).

My mother just had surgery 3-4 years ago, and last year and a half my brother was admitted. No one is working in the house and we're only relying on our rental house in the province which is just enough for our daily needs.
