Hot take: If your UX portfolio doesnt show how you helped the business make (or save) money, you’re not ready for senior.
l will say it louder for the figma-fixated folks in the back:
Pretty designs don’t get buy-in. Business impact does.
I have reviewed countless UX portfolios over the years and the one thing most of them miss? Context. Not design context. Business context.
They tell me what the button looked like.
Not why the button mattered.
They show the research process.
But not how that research influenced a revenue-driving decision.
They tell me they made the checkout flow “smoother.”
Cool. Did that increase conversion? Reduce drop-off? Help retention? Improve CAC:LTV?
I myselft learned this the hard way, btw. I once redesigned something that looked way better and worked smoother, with all the shiny buttons and aesthetics, but conversions dropped.
Why? Turns out I removed something “annoying” that was actually doing a great job of qualifying users.
As you grow in your career, you need to zoom out.
UX is not separate from product.
Product is not separate from business.
And business is not the enemy, it’s the reason your design job exists.
So yeah, your typography choices matter. But so does understanding:
What keeps the CEO up at night
Why the product team keeps pushing for that one annoying feature
Where churn is happening and why
My advice?
Next time you do a project, ask yourself:
“If I were the founder, what would I care about here?”
Then design for that too.
