Rhaenyra Targaryen is the Stannis Baratheon of House of the Dragon — and I mean that as a compliment

Hear me out: in terms of personality and character traits, Rhaenyra from House of the Dragon mirrors a lot of what makes Stannis Baratheon such a compelling figure in A Song of Ice and Fire. And I say this as someone who genuinely admires both of them.

Both Rhaenyra and Stannis are duty-bound, stubborn, and unyielding in the face of injustice. They don’t care about being liked — they care about being right. They have this intense moral rigidity that can be off-putting to others, but it comes from a deep belief in legitimacy and order. Rhaenyra, like Stannis, isn’t playing the game for fun — she sees the Iron Throne as hers by right, and she won’t let anyone take that from her, no matter how much political maneuvering or character assassination is thrown her way.

She also shares that tragic loneliness that defines Stannis. Surrounded by people who don’t fully understand her, misrepresented by history (or mushroom, in her case), and constantly walking the line between righteous fury and tragic downfall. But like Stannis, there’s also something noble in her refusal to back down. She’s not the most charming or politically savvy, but she stands her ground.

And just like how many readers/viewers grow to appreciate Stannis over time, I think Rhaenyra will eventually be seen the same way — not as perfect, but as someone who stayed true to her convictions even as the world tried to crush her for it.
