Sugar parent relationships. What they don’t tell you about it.

Discussion

Hey everyone,

I’m a sex worker, and I want to start by saying: I have nothing against sex work. full respect to anyone doing their thing safely and on their own terms. But lately I’ve seen something in r/KenyanRelationships that I can’t ignore.

I keep spotting 18–22-year-olds asking about sugar parent arrangements. As someone who has walked this path without knowing what I was really signing up for, it breaks my heart to watch young people get glamorized into a world that can chew you up and spit you out.

Let’s call it what it is: sugar parenting is sex work, because sex (or intimacy) is the currency. And while there’s nothing wrong with trading time, companionship, or affection for money or gifts… it’s not a game. Designer bags don’t come with hazard pay, and “mentorship” can quickly turn into manipulation when the checks stop.

I hate how easy it is to normalize and glamorize sex work online; like it’s just another side hustle, while sweeping the real dangers under the rug. At 19 or 22 you’re fresh out of school, still figuring life out, and have so much to live for. I wish we could agree that sugar arrangements should be for experienced adults who know the full price of admission.

So I’m reaching out to this community: • Sex workers: What red flags do you wish you’d spotted early on in sugar relationships? • Sugar babies & parents: What’s it really like; both the perks and the pitfalls? • Anyone else: How can we better educate and support young people so they don’t pay the hard way?

Drop your stories, advice, or warnings. Let’s have a real talk about what’s at stake before more of our young friends get in over their heads
