How is WW2 taught in Japan?

What are most Japanese people’s perceptions of WW2? How do they view Japan’s position in the war, and are they aware of the atrocities that the Imperialist Japanese army committed in East and Southeast Asia? Would you say that the Japanese youth would be more willing to learn about Japan’s role in the war, or is it still considered a taboo topic?
