Processing DV court date

TW- Need to Vent. Proceed With Caution

In a few weeks, my ex will have his court date and will likely be taking a plea bargain. He doesn’t have a criminal history, so despite strong evidence including his confession, it seems the justice system has decided it wants to rehabilitate him. I know it’s selfish of me to want, but I just wish the system had gone further. He won’t learn anything from this except that he can get away with felony-level charges with little consequence. He’s not the type to look inward, reflect, and make real changes to his life— he’s the type to brag about being untouchable. I fear for not only my future, but the future of my family, as well as any girl who might end up with him. Unfortunately, it seems that this is the reality for many people who make it out of DV situations. I worry that for the rest of my life, I’ll be looking over my shoulder, wondering if he’ll kill me or someone I love. I will be constantly taking precautions so he can’t find me, while he lives his life anxiety-free. I won’t be able to update my LinkedIn because I don’t want him to know where I work. I’ll have to change my phone number. I won’t be able to post where I’m on vacation until after I leave. I can’t get any dating apps, because if he somehow finds out, who knows what he’d do. Maybe I’d even have to change my name. I’ll never fully be free of him, since he told me he would stalk me for the rest of his life. Restraining orders aren’t lifelong. I hate that he still has control over me, and likely will for the rest of my life. I know I’m lucky to be alive, but I keep asking myself: for how long?
