He came back after a year like nothing happened

Help

Hi everyone, I’d love to get some outside perspective on this — I’m feeling really confused and overwhelmed.

About a year ago, I was in a relationship with a man who clearly has a fearful avoidant attachment style. I, on the other hand, lean more anxiously attached. He was the one who ended things back then. He ended the relationship very abruptly, just when things started getting serious between us. During the breakup and the year that followed, he kept his distance and barely responded to me when I reached out a few times — it was painful and I worked hard to move on.

Yesterday, suddenly, he reappeared out of nowhere and started texting me a lot — playful, flirty, teasing messages. He brings up the past, inside jokes..

What’s really messing with my head is that he’s now acting like nothing ever happened — as if the breakup, the distance, the silence for a whole year never existed. He’s suddenly behaving just like he used to when we were together, and it feels so surreal. Like he picked up right where we left off — without ever acknowledging the pain or offering any explanation.

He once told me he never goes back to exes. But now he’s here, acting interested, and being very emotionally provocative — but still hasn’t said why he came back, or what he actually wants.

I can’t tell if this is just a lonely moment for him, an ego boost, or if he actually misses me. It’s hard because I did feel the relationship was meaningful, and I wonder if it meant more to him too — even though he had other flings after.

Do you think he might still care — or is this just sex, validation, boredom? Should I confront him or just keep watching how things unfold?
