When my girlfriend and I moved to the Bay Area, I thought we were beginning a great adventure.

I'm working for a firm that's paying me enough to more than cover the costs for both of us, but she is getting frustrated not finding work that she wants or enjoys

And she's begun aiming irritations and anger at me.

So I'm surprised she's agreed when a college acquaintance (you😊) asks if you can crash with us while you land in the City to visit med schools and take an extended break from demands back home.

She doesn't care that you see her snip and get angry at me for things while I take the three of us out for dinners and drinks, concerts and events.

It gets awkward.

One night you hear us arguing, and she says some vicious stuff while we were in our bedroom.

I come out to sleep on the couch.

A few minutes later she stomps around the apartment and asks if you want to go out with her to burn off some energy.

I hear you tell her you have an interview at UCSF tomorrow morning and pass.

That makes her madder and she stomps out the door.

You come out of the spare room to get a glass of water and see my silhouette in the darkened living room.

And I see you.

“Sorry,” I say.

And we talk.

And after feeling so alone so far away from home... And after realizing that I missed someone who knows me, sitting and talking with me…
