AAA Gaming on a Macbook Pro with less than RM100 a month
Hi guys, I thought I'll share something that took me way too long to figure out but is super rewarding - how to game properly on my 2018 Macbook Pro, on a low budget...in Malaysia. And not super outdated games or Mac-only games, the same AAA grade titles that people with five figure gaming rig setups are playing. Basically it involves signing up on 4 different websites entirely, which is really not as easy as it should be. It really should be simpler, but its not. So, you will need a:
- A Yes 5G Gaming Membership (even if you're not a Yes subcriber you can sign up) [RM15-50 p/m]
- A Steam Account (because all the games are on Steam) [RM varies]
- An Xbox PC Game Pass (RM5-RM20 p/m] {Note this is NOT XBox Cloud Gaming!}
- NVIDIA GeForce Now App (included in the Yes Gaming Membership)
So, first you start on CloudGaming.my, and choose a plan. Basically the thing with cloud gaming is that a server somewhere is doing the heavy lifting, and you are basically streaming a movie, in a way. The most common option would be the RM50 monthly subscription (RM30 if you're a Yes subsciber), which is pretty cheap for a "renting" a top notch gaming rig in the cloud. I have no idea why Yes isn't promoting this more. At least they have the sense to secure CloudGaming.my
Then after paying for your plan, that you will either start cloud gaming in a browser (Microsoft Edge recommended), but I recommend downloading the EXE on Windows or the DMG on Mac. I'm running on a 2018 Macbook Pro btw, so I would say that's a fairly ancient setup, yours should be better...
Next, you need to: Connect Steam. Connect XBOX PC Game Pass. Because if you don't connect it, how to play games? I bought Control: Ultimate Edition for RM 15(!) during the recent Steam sale btw, so happy about that, there was a 48 hour sale recently and I've been waiting to play Control since forever.
Only Steam and Xbox, and Battle.net have proper syncing.
Oh, and if you're on a Mac and some games need the middle mouse button (especially first person shooters), you can install this app from GitHub that lets you tap three fingers on your trackpad to do a middle mouse button click. It's surprising Apple didn't have that gesture by default.
Lastly, launch the NVIDIA GeForce Now app and you can start playing your games.
My modest game library. Would buy CyberPunk 2077 but it's way too expensive now. HINT.
And that concludes it! Enjoy! If you found this guide useful, please feel free to buy me a kopi so I can buy more games....and continue my journey developing a game which is educational & violent and will teach people how to type faster :) https://coff.ee/joshlim
