Star Wars future and present: a discussion (and pet peeve)

General Discussion

I like to think all of us here are fans of the franchise. Despite our varied feelings on the many different offerings we've been given, we all love Star Wars.

I have a few thoughts on the franchise. First. Why, out of all the IP that are on TV and movies, that have an abundance of of their own books, comics, Manga, and video games does Star Wars seem to be the only one that not only doesn't, but refuses to adapt any of the ones they themselves have produced? I have never understood their reluctance to put to any screen their numerous books, comic story lines or adapt any of their games. The amount of fans each of these have is ridiculously high, are clamoring for them, but they won't do it. Make it make sense.

I understand that film makers and TV showrunners want to do their own thing, but with all the ones that HAVE headed up projects, nearly all of them have said how big of fans they are of the franchise, with many also saying they were big fans of the games, novels and comics. Seems to me to be leaving money on the table.

I believe we all can appreciate how difficult it must be to shepherd a project from start to finish. Concept, writing, production, etc. I think we all wish that Disney would HEAR us when we say to stop announcing projects so damn early, only to have them never come to be. It not only gets frustrating, but also worrisome for the future. I feel like James Gunn is doing his dcu the right way at the moment, but not wanting to move forward with anything until he has a script in hand that he feels has a story WORTH telling. I think any studio should do the same. With how long it's been since we've had a proper SW film release, would it have killed them to not announce any of the ones they did, when they did, since none have come to fruition anyway?

I feel the galaxy is big enough to warrant several projects going on at once that are situated within different eras, IF they position them right AND release them all. I would think start and stay in one era on TV, and build towards possibly a stand alone film (not, however, like what they're doing with mando), then you have another era that strictly film, and then pivot to a show. However they want to do it, there needs to be a feeling that is an EVENT. That's how Star wars was. They all felt BIG, and meaningful to US. I miss that.

I am a 48yo white gay dude. I grew up with the OT. I didn't read the old EU material but love the new novels and comics. I'm not a gamer, but know a little about each of the newer entries. I have mixed feelings on the PT, and aside from TRoS,i love the sequels. The show, hitst and misses alike, I still ENJOYED. It's Star wars. It's my favorite franchise. But it can be better.
