Working with Owner Builder and Where to Start?

Hi all,

We’re starting the renovation process on a pretty run-down old home in Southern Highlands NSW — 2 bed, 2 bath, no extensions, just a full refresh. My husband is a licensed general contractor originally from California, so he has a strong background in construction and project management, but he’s not licensed in NSW.

Given his experience, we’re considering going the owner-builder route. Is this a wise move for a project of this scale? It’s our first personal reno in Australia, so we’re keen to avoid any major missteps.

Would builders typically be open to working with owner-builders? Or would it be better to just start chatting to a chippy and build the team from there?

Any advice or shared experiences would be appreciated!
