The Truth About Zakat and Jizya in the Mughal Era
I have heard many say that Muslims were supposed to pay zakat which was 2.5% and Jizya was for non-muslims. Also, Zakat amount was higher than jizya.
zakat is only obligatory if your wealth reaches or exceeds a minimum threshold called the nisab . Jizya is for all non-muslim man.
In zakat, wealth must meet or exceed nisab (85g gold or 595g silver equivalent)
In Jizya, No fixed nisab; liability depends on being adult, able-bodied, and financially capable.
They forget to mention the real reason why Jizya was imposed.
Quran (9:29): “Fight those who do not believe in Allah… until they pay the jizya with willing submission and feel themselves subdued.”
This verse commands Muslims to fight until non-Muslims pay jizya and acknowledge Muslim authority.
Subjugation & Obedience
The phrase “feel themselves subdued” (Arabic: dhill) implies non-Muslims are to accept a subordinate political status under Muslim rule.
Dress Codes: Various hadith and fiqh rulings prescribe distinctive clothing or markers so non-Muslims can be recognized.
Example: Al-Mawardi (11th century jurist) states dhimmis should wear distinctive dress or badges.
Dhimmis are restricted from public display of their religion—no loud calls to prayer, no public processions louder than Muslims’ prayer calls.
Construction of new churches or synagogues is often restricted or prohibited.
Dhimmi testimony is often considered less weighty than a Muslim’s in courts (according to some schools of jurisprudence).
Dhimmis are typically not allowed to hold military or high governmental offices.
Muslim men can marry dhimmi women; Muslim women cannot marry non-Muslim men (based on Quran 2:221 and hadith).
Dhimmis cannot marry Muslim women.
