Ran too much, too quickly in minimal shoes

Hi guys. I recently started to run again after several years of avoiding it like the plague. In the part few years I made the transition to zero-drop, wide toe box shoes and I LOVE them. I finally have zero pain from my posterior tibial tendinitis for the first time ever thanks to switching. In many aspects, it’s been perfect, but I did a dumb and wondered if anyone else has done this and what they did to help themselves.

I just have a cheap pair of Whitins right now for exercise. The Velcro strap kind if you’ve seen those on Amazon. I started running again in them and felt AMAZING. It was so cool to run without pain unlike in my teenage years when I’d wear Nike Pegasus or Brooks Glycerins that made my feet scream. Now the problem: I overdid it. I went from 0 to just over 2 miles in under a month on top of increasing my time lifting weights. I went from working out a couple/few times a week to six days a week. I felt some soreness last weekend while hanging out with friends, and then the next day I went to go run again and my peroneal tendon screamed at me. I have been icing and in a boot and just went to an ankle brace as the swelling has gone down. Luckily, I’m in physical therapy for jaw issues right now, and they said I should be okay. I went too hard too quickly.

I did get a pair of Topo ST-5s to try as my PT said that brand has a bit more cushion while still being zero-drop and wider in the toe-box. He mentioned the cushion helping because running does put so much pressure on tendons and all of that. I’m going to work on trying to strengthen my ankles when the pain is gone and take the running thing slower than I was. It was a bit defeating because for the first time in my life I felt really good running. Has anyone else done something like this? How did you build up running in minimal shoes without injuring yourself? I refuse to go back to normal shoes because I know my other tendinitis will come right back. Thank you!
