Backstory for my Dark Elf: Malazar
Getting ready for another run of Skyrim, and thought I would create a backstory for a Dunmer with a penchant for thievery and magic, and a dark past. Put in a few details into AI and it spit out something neat that I thought I would share:
The ash-choked winds of Morrowind were Malazar’s first lullaby, the crumbling streets of a post-Great War Vvardenfell his only home. Orphaned by the conflict that had ravaged Tamriel, he learned early that kindness was a luxury few could afford, and fewer still would offer. His childhood was a brutal ballet of dodging starvation, outrunning older, stronger street rats, and scrounging for scraps in the shadow of Red Mountain's perpetual gloom. His eyes, already the color of molten obsidian, hardened with each passing day, reflecting the unforgiving world around him.
Survival was a solitary art until, by chance or fate, he stumbled into a den of kindred spirits. They were the forgotten, the discarded, the ones who didn't fit anywhere else. Cutthroats with cynical grins, nimble-fingered thieves with haunted eyes, and misfits of every race, they formed a ragged tapestry of defiance against a world that had rejected them. In their company, Malazar found a strange, unexpected solace. He learned the silent language of the shadows, honing his natural agility into a formidable thieving prowess. More surprisingly, a latent talent for the arcane began to stir within him. Under the tutelage of a grizzled, one-eyed Breton sorcerer, he discovered the raw power of destruction magic, the searing heat of fire, and the chilling bite of frost becoming extensions of his will. For a time, he knew something akin to happiness, a fragile bloom in the desolate landscape of his life. This motley crew became his family, their shared scars a bond stronger than blood.
Their refuge, however, was not destined to last. The Thalmor, ever vigilant in their pursuit of perceived threats to their dominion, had been tracking a rogue Altmer mage rumored to be sheltering among the outcasts. On a moonless night, their Justiciars descended upon the hideout like a plague of locusts. There was no warning, no parley, only the cold glint of steel and the crackle of hostile magic. Malazar, returning from a late-night score, witnessed the slaughter from the shadows. The screams of his family, the sickening thud of bodies hitting the ground, the triumphant, chilling pronouncements of the Thalmor as they ensured no one was left alive. Every face he knew, every voice he cherished, silenced in a brutal, efficient massacre. No mercy was shown, only the chilling efficiency of the Aldmeri Dominion.
The emptiness that followed was a vast, echoing chasm in his soul. Grief twisted into a burning, singular purpose: vengeance. He stalked the Thalmor, a phantom of retribution, using every trick he had learned and every spell he had mastered. He hunted them, one by one, across the lands, their cries of surprise and pain the only balm to his wounded spirit. When the last one fell, his hands still trembling from the exertion, the anticipated satisfaction never came. The void remained, cold and vast, a testament to what he had lost. Vengeance was a hollow victory, leaving him with nothing but the ashes of his past and the bitter taste of unfulfilled longing.
His heart, once merely hardened, now felt like a shard of obsidian. The yearning for happiness was replaced by a gnawing hunger for power, a desperate attempt to fill the emptiness within. He heard whispers of ancient magic, untapped potential, and forgotten knowledge in the frigid lands of Skyrim. It was a land of wild, untamed magic, far from the suffocating grasp of the Dominion he now loathed with every fiber of his being. He journeyed north, driven by a relentless need to become strong enough to never again be powerless, to never again lose what he held dear. His path was one of shadows and desperation, until a fateful, ill-advised border crossing, a run-in with an Imperial ambush meant for Stormcloaks, found him bound and gagged on a cart, heading towards a small, unassuming town called Helgen, and the headman's axe.
