how long can you tan in 95 degree weather with tanning oil on?

new to tanning. today i was laying out in the sun for almost 2 hours with tanning oil on, and applying sun screen regularly. after looking it up people say anywhere between 15-45 minutes only. is this dangerous and how dangerous and in what way?
